Interview Dr. Upul in english
Dr. Upul Rajapaksha, chief physician at Thaulle Resort, explains how an Ayurveda cure in Sri Lanka works, which conditions Panchakarma can address and why one week is not enough.
Dr. Upul Rajapaksha is chief physician at Thaulle Resort and a registered practitioner with the Ayurveda Medical Council of Sri Lanka. He has led the Ayurveda centre at Yoda Lake since 2015. He has treated over 3,000 European guests, specialises in Panchakarma and offers consultations in German.
If you want to use an Ayurveda cure as a serious health intervention, treatments alone are not enough. You need a doctor who connects diagnosis, therapy and progress with precision – and who understands your symptoms within the context of Western lifestyles and work patterns.
At Thaulle, Dr. Upul accompanies your Ayurveda cure in Sri Lanka from the first consultation to the final review. He combines Ayurvedic medical expertise with experience in treating European guests – and has done so for over 25 years.

Dr. Upul studied Ayurveda medicine from 1990 to 1996 at the medical faculty for Ayurveda in Sri Lanka – a six-year programme including a practical year, meeting international medical standards.
During his studies, he completed additional training in acupuncture and homoeopuncture. He then specialised in Panchakarma treatments at the University of Kerala in India and in yoga, meditation and Kshara Suthra at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka.
For his contribution to Ayurvedic medicine, he was awarded the prestigious title of “Vaidyaabimani”.
Ayurveda is a family tradition for Dr. Upul: his father is a renowned Ayurveda doctor. His brother and wife are also qualified Ayurveda practitioners. What began as a calling was shaped by academic training and decades of clinical practice into deep medical expertise.
Many hotels offer Ayurveda treatments. The decisive difference lies in medical leadership. When diagnosis, therapy planning, adjustment and progress reviews come from one qualified physician, your cure is not a standard programme. It becomes an individually guided treatment with measurable outcomes.
At Thaulle, you do not receive a standardised wellness routine. Dr. Upul analyses your Dosha type, your current symptoms and your life context. From this, he creates a therapy plan that precisely coordinates treatments, Ayurvedic medication, nutrition and yoga.
The Ayurveda treatments at Thaulle are combined with the traditional medical philosophies of Sri Lanka. All applications – including acupuncture, yoga, meditation, medication and meals – are tailored to your mental and physical requirements. Once the therapy plan is created, the entire team of therapists is briefed to ensure consistent implementation.
More about the full cure programme at Thaulle.
Dr. Upul has treated over 3,000 European Ayurveda guests and spent one year working in Germany as an Ayurveda doctor and acupuncturist. This combination is rare in Sri Lanka. It means he understands not only Ayurveda, but also Western health complaints, work realities and expectations of medical care.
Most guests at Thaulle are working professionals in mid-life or people seeking a medically guided reset after prolonged periods of strain. Dr. Upul has known this starting point for decades.
Burnout, depression, insomnia, arthritis, skin conditions such as psoriasis, detoxification and weight management – these are the most common reasons European guests come to Thaulle. Dr. Upul assesses these complaints not only through the lens of Ayurveda, but also within the context of Western work and stress patterns.
Especially for exhausted high performers, this experience is a meaningful difference.
German-Speaking Support from Your Ayurveda Doctor
At the start, Dr. Upul evaluates your Dosha type and your current symptoms. This includes a personal consultation, Ayurvedic assessment of your symptoms, your constitution and a clear definition of treatment priorities.
Based on this evaluation, your personal treatment plan is created. It includes Ayurveda treatments, Ayurvedic medication, dietary recommendations as well as yoga and meditation – precisely tailored to your mental and physical needs.
During your stay, Dr. Upul regularly reviews your progress. If your condition changes, the plan is adjusted accordingly. You receive your treatment plan for the following day at dinner each evening. Dr. Upul and the team are available around the clock.
At the end of your programme, Dr. Upul discusses which changes are already noticeable. You receive specific recommendations for nutrition, lifestyle and routines to continue at home. Your Ayurveda cure does not end abruptly – it ends with clear guidance for daily life.
Dr. Upul recommends a minimum stay of two weeks for a Panchakarma cure. Three weeks is ideal. This timeframe is necessary to complete all three phases: pre-treatment, main treatment and post-treatment.
A one-week cure is not sufficient for therapeutically meaningful results, according to Dr. Upul. The body needs time to respond to the treatments and to sustainably rebalance the Doshas.
For guests seeking deep detoxification and regeneration, experience at Thaulle shows: the longer the stay, the more lasting the results. Crucially, however, consistent adherence to the Ayurveda recommendations during the cure is equally important.
Detailed information on duration and pricing is available on the prices page.
Thaulle is not a hotel with an Ayurveda department. It is a pure Ayurveda hotel where the entire property is dedicated to multi-day, medically guided cures. Six private therapy rooms, an in-house pharmacy, an organic farm and a permanent team of doctors and therapists form the framework.
The location on Yoda Lake, away from tourist centres, is intentional. This distance from overstimulation supports sleep, recovery and full focus on your programme. Yala National Park is just 14 km away – for excursions between treatments.
An overview of all rooms at Thaulle – from 18 to 57 m², all with nature views and Vastu room design – is available on the.
