The location of Thaulle Resort
Welcome to the heart of Sinhala nature! Leave the hustle and bustle of the western world far behind when you spend your vacation in the peaceful seclusion of our resort. Seemingly endless rice fields run through the Hambantota district, where our hotel is located – a sight that covers the soul like a soothing veil. The Thaulle Resort itself is located directly on the idyllic Lake Yoda. Just a stone’s throw away, elephants and leopards roam the scenic savannah of Yala National Park. But Sri Lanka’s oldest nature reserve is just one of the fascinating destinations in the near vicinity. Good weather is usually taken care of: Due to the fortunate geographical location, the region is usually spared rain during the rainy season from April to June.
In hurry? Go straight to our summary.
Thaulle view: Room with lake view
When the rising sun glitters on the reflective surface of Lake Yoda in the morning, you can watch this fascinating play of colors from your room. Because every room in the Thaulle Resort has a window front with a balcony. You can also enjoy the view of the lake from the restaurant and our garden. Soak up the harmony and vastness of the landscape as majestic buffalo glide through the water and white-tailed eagles skillfully fish for prey in the distance. And when the sun has disappeared over the horizon and night falls, the illuminated dome of the Tissamaharama Vihara stupa towers over the lake and gives you an impression of the radiance of Buddhist architecture.
Kirinda Beach: A slice of paradise
Just a 10-minute drive from Thaulle Resort, you’ll find one of our island’s most peaceful spots: Kirinda Beach. We offer you an exclusive section of the six-kilometre-long sandy beach that is reserved for our hotel guests. You will find few places in Sri Lanka where you are more private. Forget the world around you and lose yourself completely in the present with a stroll along the shore. Depending on the current, you can also dive into the waves of the Indian Ocean, discover the underwater world while snorkeling or try your luck at fishing.
Thaulle’s infinity pool is an incredible sight. The turquoise waters seem to blend with the horizon in the distance. From here, you have a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. The pool is perfect for a relaxing swim and provides a welcome cool down on hot days. You can reach our Thaulle pool in a few minutes via tuk tuk or bicycle directly from the resort.
Rice fields: the beauty of red gold
If you let your gaze wander a little further, you will discover not far from the hotel a jewel that is as beautiful as it is important in the Sinhalese landscape: countless rice fields stretch almost to the horizon. Not only are they beautiful and comforting to look at, but they are also a valuable food source for the local population. The region is one of the most important growing areas for red rice in Sri Lanka. Against this background, the original function of the two lakes Yoda and Tissa becomes clear: They were created as a sophisticated irrigation system for the surrounding rice fields. The lakes and paddy fields are a good example of how the impressive landscape hides a delicate balance between what nature has created and what man has created.
Nature: An invitation to explore
During a short tour you will soon find out that our hotel is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Sri Lanka. The diverse nature around the resort invites you to take exploratory walks. One of the most beautiful destinations is right on our doorstep: Lake Yoda. You can explore it comfortably on foot, rent one of the hotel’s bicycles or cruise it on a catamaran. You don’t even have to leave the hotel grounds for a small but worthwhile sight: take a detour to our fruit, vegetable and herb gardens and enjoy the peace and quiet. With a bit of luck, a peacock will keep you company and sweeten your walk with a look at its colorful plumage.
Spirituality: Omnipresent Buddhism
Buddhism is firmly anchored in the region and its presence can also be felt in our hotel. According to tradition, we celebrated the inauguration with a solemn Buddhist ceremony (“Pirit”) and a procession (“Perahera”) from the temple to the monastery. 30 monks then prayed at the hotel for a night to give him protection. Not only in the hotel itself, but also in the immediate vicinity, you will find witnesses to the Buddhist tradition, such as the white stupa Tissamaharama Vihara, which rises on a rock within sight of the hotel, or the holy city of Kataragama. A particularly good time to witness the actively lived faith is the full moon day (“Poya”).
Country and people: harmonious coexistence
In accordance with our philosophy of gentle tourism, it is important to us to establish a connection with the people in the region and to live in harmonious neighborhoods. In order to put this project on a secure footing, we gave them the opportunity to visit our hotel and get an idea of their new neighbors at the inauguration. We also keep in close contact with the craftsmen and companies that make furniture for us and regularly invite them to visit us to see how their work is being used. So that our neighbors also benefit from our success, we give people from the area the opportunity to be trained by us and support the farmers in the area with food during longer dry periods.
