Welcome at Colombo Airport. Your German-speaking guide greets you and accompanies you on the approx. 3–4 hour drive to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Kandy.
En route, you visit the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya — over 4,000 plant species across approx. 60 hectares, including the famous Avenue of Palms and the Cannonball Tree planted by King George V.
In Kandy, you discover the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka’s spiritual heart, as well as Kandy Lake. The day concludes with a traditional cultural dance show showcasing the island’s performing arts.
Overnight: Hotel Thilanka, Kandy (mid-range, breakfast included)
Sounds like your kind of journey?
After breakfast, depart for the central highlands. The approx. 6–7 hour drive takes you through one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic regions — past tea plantations, waterfalls and lush valleys. Your guide stops flexibly for photo opportunities and short explorations.
Nuwara Eliya, also called “Little England”, is steeped in colonial history and folklore. A visit to a tea factory and plantation offers insight into one of the island’s oldest trades, cultivated since British colonial times.
Overnight: The Araliya Green Hills Hotel, Nuwara Eliya (mid-range, breakfast included)
Tea, highlands, colonial flair — sound right?
After breakfast, your guide takes you to Nanuoya railway station. Here begins one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys: approx. 1.5 hours through tropical mountain landscape to Ella — the highlight is the Nine Arch Bridge, a masterpiece of colonial railway architecture. Your guide drives the luggage to Ella by car and meets you on arrival.
Continue to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home. Unlike other facilities, Udawalawe follows strict conservation rules and protects its residents from mass tourism.
Final leg: approx. 1 hour drive to Thaulle Resort on the south coast. A Yala Safari can take place on the same day or during your follow-up stay — Yala is Sri Lanka’s largest and most renowned national park, home to leopards, elephants, sloth bears and a rich birdlife.
Final hotel: Thaulle Resort (booking notes below)
